Safety at Riveredge

Read these river trip do’s and don’ts, then pass them along so everyone is prepared to fully enjoy their great escape to Camp Riveredge Paradise. Fashion should take a back seat to comfort and safety at the campsite and on the river.

What to wear and bring

  • Sneakers or outdoor shoes for activities at the campsite.
  • Strapped sandals or river shoes for activities on the river. The river floor is rocky, and shoes protect you from sharp edges.
  • Shorts or a bathing suit, a tee shirt and a windbreaker, plus sunscreen or tanning lotion. These are the basics for hot weather.
  • Glasses worn with a strap, if you wear glasses.
  • Day trip guests: a dry set of clothing and shoes for a post-trip change and a comfortable trip home.
  • Waterproof cases for all valuables, and for every camera.

Valuables

Use waterproof cases for all valuables, and keep all cameras in waterproof cases or containers. Large zip lock bags work well for non-breakables, but they won’t protect valuables from bumps or breakage. Perhaps the best idea? Leave valuables at home.

The most important thing to bring

Of fashion, food and river etiquette, what matters most is the ability to swim, and the knowledge that any water-related activity poses serious hazards and risks to participants. We take precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable river journey, but you must understand and use safety measures to stay safe.

You’ll receive a river and safety orientation before your trip. Pay attention during this briefing. If something isn’t clear, ask questions now.

Always make sure your life vest fits properly and always wear it on the river, even when swimming. Don’t overestimate your swimming ability, and be aware that there are sudden drop-offs on the river floor.

The don’ts list

  • Never wear heavy shoes or boots in the water.
  • No glass containers of any kind while doing water sports on the river. Glass breaks easily and is dangerous to future river users.
  • Do not bring glass containers of any kind with you.
  • Guests who appear to be intoxicated will not be allowed to do any of our activities, for safety reasons.
  • Do not overestimate your swimming ability. There are sudden drop-offs on the river floor.
  • Do not take your life vest off on the river, even when swimming.

Health and Safety Plan (HASP)

Camp Riveredge Paradise has a detailed Health and Safety Plan that we use to monitor and review the safety protocol at our campsite. To review it, ask the manager or instructor at the resort to show you a copy.

Now you’re ready. Enjoy your stay!
